Andy Williams was a great servant to the club and gave his all on the pitch no matter what as well as always being the loudest voice of support when on the side-lines. It’s always sad to see a player leave, especially one who helped the club achieve so much, whether noticed or not. To celebrate the two seasons of Willo at Cheltenham, we’re taking a look at some of his best moments in red, white, and sometimes blue.
IPSWICH AWAY
He may not have scored or even had many shots, but Andy Williams’ performance at Portman Road in 2021/22 epitomises everything that Williams brought to the Cheltenham squad. It was a makeshift side, ravaged by injury and with little chance of getting anything from the game according to the home supporters. Williams ran until he couldn’t run anymore, supported the players as if he was in with the fans, and annoyed every single tractor boy in attendance, a very well earned point brought back to Gloucestershire with thanks in great part to Andy Williams.
2021/22 PRE SEASON
Williams was a goal off his 2020/21 goal scoring tally in preseason alone ahead of our goal scoring return. His strikes included a brace against Championship side Coventry City and a hattrick against Hereford FC in an 8-1 win. Williams continued his fine preseason form into the first day of the season, scoring the equaliser in a 1-1 draw away at Crewe Alexandra before getting four more in all competitions.
FANS RETURN
A Christmas miracle saw supporters return to grounds once more after you know what kept us away. We only managed the three games at home, with only one win, but that win was certainly wonderful. A 5-3 victory in a third v second showdown against not quite local rivals Exeter City sent us home feeling exuberant especially after we had Williams and Will Boyle score in front of the home end.
DERBY DAY DELIGHT
Williams found the net just before the hour mark to double Cheltenham’s lead in El Glossico. It was a first victory over our Gloucestershire neighbours since 1998 (we were too busy in League One and Two for most of that) and was one of many great results in a very famous season for the club. It proved to be an important goal as Rovers pulled one back with under 20 minutes to go, but the robins held on and the striker’s effort was enough.
EXETER AWAY
His final goal of the title winning season can in just three minutes on the pitch as he took to the pitch in place of Sam Smith in the 97th minute and headed home from a long throw in the 91st. It was an invaluable three points in the title race and saw us come home from a ground we often struggle at, against a team vying for the promotion places, and one of the highlights of the season. Thanks to Andy Williams.
